The article notes that the doctrine of the biosphere could not have arisen earlier than a sufficient amount of data accumulated in natural science, testifying to the close interconnectedness in the nature of the phenomena of the organic and inorganic world. A reasoned answer is given to the questions: what are the methodological motives for introducing such new concepts as "biosphere" and then "noosphere" into science, what role did they play in the development of scientific theory about the Earth and what is their significance for the further development of the sciences of nature and society?
The article describes the ideas of development and interconnectedness of natural phenomena in the works of I. Kant, C. Lyell, M. V. Lomonosov, Zh.B. Lamarck, Geoffroy Saint-Hilaire, K.F. Rulye and other scientists. The definition of the polysemy of the term "noosphere" from the French scientists E. Leroy and P. Teilhard de Chardin is also given.
