The Taiwan issue is at the center of the game between China and the United States. The Taiwan issue not only influences the direction of relations between the two countries, but also constantly affects the security situation in the Asia-Pacific region. For China, the Taiwan issue is about national sovereignty, territorial integrity, and national unity, while Taiwan is of great strategic importance to the United States. After World War II, although the internal and external policies of the US two parties and the previous US administrations were very different, there was a common bottom line in their Taiwan policy, that is, not to allow the two sides of the Taiwan Strait to unify, so as to achieve the purpose of hegemony in the Asia-Pacific region and containing China.
The article mainly analyzes the Taiwanese policy of successive US administrations since the 1950s. Understanding the Taiwan issue in Sino-US relations can not only analyze the role of the United States in resolving the Taiwan issue, but also provide a deeper understanding of the development and change in Sino-US relations.
