Peacekeeping is one of the pillars of the United Nations and has been, is and will continue to be an essential tool for establishing lasting peace in war-torn societies. This article focuses on the protection of civilians in the context of UN peacekeeping missions. The international system has changed in many ways since the first deployment of peacekeepers in 1948; new actors and tasks have emerged, and mandates have changed. The 21st century brings with its enormous challenges to the peace and security of the international community, and peacekeeping will have to address many of these challenges
